The short version
This site sets no cookies, runs no analytics or tracking scripts and shows no advertising, so there is no cookie banner. It collects the standard server logs every website keeps, and whatever you choose to send through the contact form.
Server logs
The web server (Apache) records each request: your IP address, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page and your browser’s user-agent string. We use these logs to keep the site running and secure — for example to spot abuse or broken links. They are not used to build profiles, not combined with other data and not shared, and they are rotated and deleted after about two weeks.
The contact and corrections forms
If you send a message, we store the reason you chose, your name and email address if you give them, the venue or page you mention, your message, and your IP address and browser user-agent (to deal with spam). This is saved in a private inbox on our server — not in the website’s public files — and emailed to the editor. We use it only to deal with your message and, for corrections, to update the listing. We don’t publish it, add you to a mailing list or pass it to anyone else, except where the law requires.
Things stored in your browser
If JavaScript is on, the directory remembers whether you last chose the list or the map view, using your browser’s local storage. That preference never leaves your device and isn’t sent to us. Clearing your browser’s site data removes it.
Third parties
- OpenStreetMap map tiles. When a map is shown (on the map page, on a venue page when you scroll to its map, or when you choose the map view), your browser loads map images from tile.openstreetmap.org. That sends OpenStreetMap your IP address, browser user-agent, the map area being viewed and our site address as the referrer. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy.
- Links out. Directions links open Google Maps, and venue links open the venue’s own website or social pages. Nothing is sent to those services until you follow a link; once you do, their own privacy policies apply.
Fonts, scripts and the map library are all served from this site; no other third-party service is contacted when you load a page.
Your rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you can ask for a copy of personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it. Email contact@pictonrestaurants.co.nz. We’ll also delete a message you sent if you ask. If you’re not happy with how we handle your request, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
